We discuss a covariant functional integral quantization of the bosonic string and other conformal field theories. In contrast to the existing approaches relying on non-covariant operator regularizations, interesting operators are true tensor objects with classical transformation laws, even in anomalous theories, while physical anomalies are manifested in the formalism in a way that is different from conventional approaches, yet often quite illuminating. In contrast to non-covariant approaches, no implicit gauge choices are involved in operator renormalization, which makes the origin of anomalies clearer.
