Historical, antrhopological and artistic trails of the cult of Saint James the Greater and Saint Michael Archangel in the camino of Santiago and in the rout of Saint Michael

La historia de los orígenes y del desarrollo del Camino de Santiago y de la Vía Micaélica se debe a la existencia de Santiago Apóstol y de San Miguel Arcángel, guías terrenas y ultraterrenales del hombre. Cada huella referida a los dos cultos afecta al mundo de las peregrinaciones y a la conocida “civilización de los peregrinajes”; esto ha evidenciado aún más los aspectos principales de las dos devociones y de sus rutas. En este ensayo se pone de manifiesto la relación entre el culto jacobeo y el culto micaélico a través de imágenes y huellas pertenecientes al mundo de las peregrinaciones teniendo en consideración no sólo los ámbitos histórico y antropológico, sino también lo artístico y cultural.The origins of the Camino de Santiago and the Route of Saint Michael can be rooted in the cult of Saint James the Greater and Saint Michael Archangel, which was the guide of the living and the dead. There are many trails referring to the world of the pilgrimages and to the “Civilization of the Pilgrimages”; in fact, it has pointed out the main ascpects of their devotion to the saints and their routes. The paper aims to give a general overview of the relation between the compostellan and michaelic cults by mentioning some examples of their main icons. The historical and artistic studies, together with anthropological and literature fields of study can be considered equally relevant to better figure out the history of the compostellan and michaelic pilgrimages
