CLINICAL STUDIES ON CEFOXITIN IN COMPLICATED URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS

Cefoxitin (CFX) was clinically evaluated in the patients with complicated urinary tract infections. The results obtained based on the criteria of UTI Committee were as follows. (1) CFX was administrated with the daily doses 4 g for 5 days in all 45 patients. The excellent efficacy was recognized in 12 cases, good in 18 cases and poor in 15 cases. The effective ratio was 67%. (2) In the evaluation of the bacteriological effect, 48 strains were isolated, and the following results were obtained; eliminated in 25 (52%), replaced in 9 (19%), decreased in 4 (8%) and unchanged in 10 (21 %). E. coli, Streptococcus jaecalis, Klebsiella and Enterococcus were highly sensitive and indol-positive Proteus and Serratia were slightly sensitive, while Pseudomonas was resistant. (3) No side effects were observed except a case of eruption
