PREFACE This work follows an introductory volume, Outline History of the Glen Canyon Region, 1776-1922, the first general reconstruction of the history of an area encompassing southeastern Utah, a part of northeastern Arizona, and smaller parts of southwestern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico. That volume was written to provide a brief but broad historical perspective for the studies to follow, for other investigators working in the same region, and for the general public who will be visiting the region in greater numbers with the passage of time. This volume consists of a detailed study of the historical sites in Glen Canyon below the mouth of the San Juan River: every place here labeled a historical site, with the exception of those between Glen Canyon Dam and Lee's Ferry, will be wholly or partly submerged by the waters of Lake Powell, or will literally stand upon its shore at maximum reservoir level. The primary objective of the study has been to learn what historical areas and remains will be covered up by the waters of the reservoir. The view was expressed in the first volume that Glen is the most historic of the canyons of the Colorado and that virtually the entire historic locale of the mining rush as an example-will be inundated. But how extensive was the historical occupancy of Glen Canyon? And what, precisely, remains in the canyon to document this occupancy? The answers have been found by use of the following method: (1) Through documentary research, and from informants, to develop information about the history and location of places where there has been substantial human activity in the canyon in historic times, including both Indian and Anglo-American sites. (2) It is false to assume that complete knowledge about any place in Glen Canyon may be obtained solely from the documents. The second step consists of historical salvage: the examination of historical places in Glen Canyon in order to record the character of each, its exact location, the kind and degree to which human action has taken place, the extent of historical remains, and anything at all about a place which might be of interest to future investigators who must rely upon these findings. vEpson Perfection 4870 Photo, 400 dpi, 8 bit, 14,135,296 byte
