The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the French Navy (Shom), based in the city of Brest, has held one of the most important documentary repositories in its field for 300 years. A graduate of the Naval School of the same city in the mid 19th century, Francisco Beuf, played a leading role in the beginnings of the Argentine Naval Hydrographic Service and the Argentine Naval School, where he settled at a time when the two countries' governments became closer, around 1880.
