The Aquinas concept of the soul in relation to neurosciences. Chosen aspects

Wydział TeologicznyJednym z najbardziej palących problemów współczesnej nauki jest znalezienie płaszczyzny dialogu z chrześcijańską wizją świata. Fundamentalne pytanie – kim jest człowiek - wpisuje się w dynamikę tego napięcia. Kluczową kwestią, która nastręcza trudności interpretacyjnych, pozostaje uznanie jakiejś niematerialności jego bytu. Tradycja eklezjalna na określenie owego antropologicznego aspektu (czy elementu) używa pojęcia duszy. Jako reprezentatywne dla zachodniego katolickiego chrześcijaństwa zostało wybrane w dysertacji nauczanie Tomasza z Akwinu w tej dziedzinie. W kontekście badań szeroko rozumianych neuronauk czynię starania, aby wykazać zbieżności ich rezultatów z wnioskami Akwinaty na temat niematerialności duszy, zwłaszcza w takich zagadnieniach jak wolność woli (wolna decyzja) czy interakcja między duchowym (niematerialnym) umysłem a ciałem. Wyjątkową wartość dla uczynienia głównej tezy zasadną i wiarygodną niosą wyniki badań anglojęzycznych neuronaukowców, do których należy włączyć Jeffrey`a Schwartza, Henry`ego P. Stappa, Robina Collinsa, Stewarta Goetza, Charles`a Taliaferro, Daniela von Wachtera czy Johna Ecclesa. Niemniej jednak Tomaszowa koncepcja duszy rozpatrywana holistycznie posiada również słabe punkty. Toteż drugim celem rozprawy jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie: czy neuronauki z nią korespondują w całości. Na tym tle na zakończenie zostanie podana propozycja innego ujęcia problemu.For the contemporary sciences, especially within the field of empirical studies, one of the crucial problems is to set down the reference point for dialog with traditional understanding of the world, based on Christian-catholic view. The key concern for it seems to be the immaterial aspect (or element) of the human being, which in theological tradition is called the soul. The first aim of this dissertation is to find the common ground between the western catholic teaching on this matter, represented by Thomas Aquinas, and neurosciences. Taking into account the outcomes mostly of the experiential work of the latter I try to pick the ideas that support Aquinas` opinions regarding immateriality of the soul, particularly in such questions as: the freedom of will or the interactionism of body and mind. On the side of neurosciences great input comes from the research of: Jeffrey Schwartz, Henry P. Stapp, Robin Collins, Stewart Goetz, Charles Taliaferro, Daniel von Wachter and John Eccles, whose achievements somehow can be harmonized with the Christian traditional view or even can acknowledge its scientific credibility. Nevertheless the Aquinas concept, discussed as a whole, has some weak points. Therefore the second aim of this work is to answer: whether neurosciences can fully correspond with his judgments? At the end a different proposition, which might integrate both of views, is presented
