Within the UK the numbers of people abusing alcohol is continuing to rise. News bulletins regularly report on the increasing incidence of alcohol misuse and the binge drinking culture. Prolonged alcohol abuse over a sustained period of time impacts on health, family and relationships. The consequences can be far reaching with each alcoholic negatively affecting at least four other people (National Council on Alcohol, 1982).
