Portrait of the scientific production of the Member-states of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries in the health sciences: a bibliometric study

Introdução – O presente estudo analisa a produção científica na área da saúde num conjunto de países que têm em comum uma história e uma língua, a portuguesa, mas essencialmente objetivos de desenvolvimento mútuos, baseados na cooperação e amizade. O objetivo do estudo é caracterizar a investigação desenvolvida pelos Estados-membros da CPLP, tendo por base a produção científica realizada na área da saúde e que se encontra indexada nas bases de dados Scopus e Web of Science. Método – A informação recolhida foi organizada e analisada recorrendo a um conjunto de variáveis bibliométricas: i) totais da produção científica; ii) áreas de investigação; iii) tipologia de estudos; iv) revistas selecionadas; v) produtividade dos autores; vi) afiliação institucional dos autores; vii) parcerias internacionais; viii) agências de financiamento; e ix) idioma de publicação. Resultados – Os resultados são de grandeza diversa. A investigação em saúde representa em alguns países metade ou mais da produção científica indexada. Existe uma predominância dos artigos, publicados maioritariamente em revistas de quartil 1, seguidos dos meeting abstract e dos artigos de revisão. A afiliação institucional aponta para o predomínio absoluto das universidades brasileiras na produção científica, bem como universidades e hospitais portugueses. Demonstra-se a proximidade geográfica de cada Estado-membro aquando do estabelecimento de parcerias institucionais. O financiamento da investigação é assegurado por fundações e institutos de ciência de diversos países, pela Comissão Europeia e pelos Ministérios da Saúde. O inglês é o idioma de publicação com mais destaque, logo seguido do português. Discussão – A análise procura demonstrar como a investigação na área da saúde tem sido encarada em cada país em particular, beneficiando a comunidade científica do empenho particular dos investigadores destes países. Estudos locais sobre saúde beneficiam o conhecimento mais aprofundado relativo a populações, intervenções e resultados, sendo possível extrair novo conhecimento científico e novas formas de comparabilidade – impacto diretamente relacionável com a criação de políticas públicas e intervenções mais ajustadas na área da saúde. Conclusões – Este estudo permite a realização de uma imagem gráfica da produção científica dos Estados-membros da CPLP na área da saúde. São desenhadas algumas linhas de atuação para o futuro: uma análise agregadora de áreas científicas e de mais recursos de informação, um observatório de produção científica da CPLP e o convite a mais estudos bibliométricos.ABSTRACT: Introduction – The present study analyzes the scientific production in health in a set of countries that share the history and the Portuguese language, but essentially mutual development goals, based on cooperation and friendship. The aim of the study is to characterize the research developed by the CPLP Member States, based on the scientific production carried out in the health studies, which is indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Method – The information retrieved was organized and analyzed using several bibliometric variables: i) totals of scientific production; (ii) research fields; iii) study typology; iv) selected journals; v) authors productivity; vi) institutional affiliation of the authors; (vii) international partnerships; viii) funding agencies; and ix) publication language. Results – The results are of diverse magnitude. Health research represents in some countries half or more of indexed scientific production. There is a predominance of articles, published mostly in quartile 1 journals, followed by meeting abstracts and review articles. Institutional affiliation points to the absolute predominance of Brazilian universities in scientific production, as well as Portuguese universities and hospitals. The geographical proximity of each Member State is shown when establishing institutional partnerships. Funding for research is provided by foundations and scientific institutes in several countries, by the European Commission and the Ministries of Health. English is the most prominent publication language, followed by Portuguese. Discussion – The analysis seeks to demonstrate how health research has been viewed in each particular country, benefiting the scientific community from the particular commitment of researchers in these countries. Local health studies benefit from more in-depth knowledge of populations, interventions, and outcomes, making it possible to extract new scientific knowledge and new forms of comparability – a directly related impact with the creation of public policies and healthier interventions. Conclusions – This study allows a graphic image of the scientific production of the CPLP Member States in the health studies. Some lines are planned for the future: an aggregate analysis of scientific studies and more information resources, an observatory of the CPLP scientific production, and the invitation to further bibliometric studies.
