The pilot projectwas funded under a force account aspart of the overall construction budgetfor the Waterfront Drive Project fromWarren Avenue to Dexter Street in EastProvidence, RI. The force account wasestablished by internal RIDOT engineersbased upon best known practices. Theforce account established equated to3.1% of the overall estimatedconstruction cost of this phase of theproject.The pilot project was granted to theUniversity of Rhode Island (URI). Thefocus was to gain insight into the retrofitprocess and to determine the mostappropriate level of emission controland best practices needed to reducediesel emissions on Public WorksProjects. The outcomes have beenutilized to better define the retrofitprocess for off road diesel constructionequipment and to develop a road mapfor the State of Rhode Island to outlinethe most feasible and cost effectiveapproach for reducing diesel particulatematter (PM) in the legacy fleet ofconstruction equipment
