Painting the in-between

Painting The In-Between is a group exhibition, conceived and curated by Richard Baker and Marco Cali, and featuring new works by six painters who are all making representational paintings and yet for whom the formalist concerns of abstraction are a cornerstone of their practice. The exhibition features recent works by Marco Cali, Alex Hanna and Cara Nahaul, from the Contemporary British Painting Group, and Tom Palin, April Virgoe, and Richard Baker, who are staff at Leeds Arts University, working on the Fine Art Course. The exhibition was arranged by Baker, Palin and Virgoe. A panel discussion was held on 30th March 2018 in the gallery in front of an audience. The event was chaired by Adam Stone. The exhibiting painters, with the exception of Nahaul, considered their contributions to the exhibition, and also the notion of in-betweenness, arising from the catalogue essay written by Palin. How might the legacy of abstraction inform painting today, and what of the relationship between the object and process of painting? Where, also, might pictures fit into this? The catalogue was published by Metapoiesis Press
