This paper seeks to explore the validity of electronic games as an art form, through an examination of art history, designation, the philosophy of play, and the methodology of game design. Definitions of art, play, and games will be examined and clarified, to provide greater context for the reader. Opinions will be investigated, from both sides of the argument, to establish equitable discourse and thorough analysis. A critique of several art games will also be given, to evaluate the current climate of artistic game design and the merit of electronic games as an art form
