Changing the paradigm of acquisition and cataloging in Polish research libraries : the impact of new information technology

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zmian, jakie zaszły w gromadzeniu i katalogowaniu zbiorów w związku z wykorzystywaniem nowych technologii informacyjnych. Zagadnienie przedstawiono na podstawie analizy piśmiennictwa, materiałów z konferencji, materiałów dokumentujących działalność bibliotek naukowych oraz częściowo na podstawie doświadczeń i obserwacji poczynionych w trakcie pracy w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej i współpracy z innymi bibliotekami. Rozpowszechnienie i wdrożenie nowych technologii informacyjnych spowodowało, że biblioteki zaczęły działać w modelu hybrydowym, używając nowoczesnych narzędzi obsługują równocześnie analogowe i cyfrowe dane i metadane, analizując wykorzystywanie zasobów dostarczanych użytkownikom skłaniają się w coraz większym stopniu w kierunku modelu biblioteki organizującej dostęp. Tworzenie i rozbudowa hybrydowego środowiska informacyjnego zaowocowało szerokim współdziałaniem bibliotekarzy. Sprostanie przez bibliotekarzy kolejnym wyzwaniom i zmianom w sposobie funkcjonowania bibliotek, jakie przyniesie zapewne dalszy rozwój technologii informacyjnych, wydaje się jak najbardziej możliwe.The thesis / purpose of the article - the purpose of this article is to present the impact of new information technologies has been having on building and cataloging library resources and the ways modern research libraries function in the last 25 years. Methods - the analysis presented in the article is done based on a thorough literature review, including conference proceedings, reports documenting the activities of research libraries, a study of statistical data illustrating changes in the library holdings as well author's own knowledge and expertise acquired in the course of her work at the Jagiellonian Library and cooperation with other libraries. Results / conclusions - dissemination and implementation of new information technology resulted in libraries starting to work in a hybrid model. Using modern tools they support both analog and digital data as well metadata. Librarians, analysing the use of resources offered to users, favour to an increasing extend an access library model. Creation and development of hybrid information environment has resulted in a wide cooperation of librarians that seems to facilitate meeting next challenges and changes in the way libraries will function in 21st century, where an important part will most probably be played by further development of information technology
