This paper revisits a debate on the role of book selection that began in the 1960s, and articles by Lawrence Thompson and Arnold Sable that reflect the two sides of the debate. The state of libraries in Africa and other developing countries due to inadequate funding argues in favor of Thompson\u27s book selection dogma, that uses careful selection to balance the needs of users with limits on funds and space
