Thomas Shaw’s description of the Near East was first published in his Travels or Observations relating to several Parts of Barbary and the Levant (1738). An Oxford scholar, Anglican minister and amateur naturalist, Shaw was appointed chaplain to the British consulate of Algiers in 1720. His travel account was acclaimed as the most authoritative on the early eighteenth-century Barbary States. The present article argues that he primarily perceived these countries as the Holy Land and turned a blind eye to their present reality.
