Reflecting on learner-centered teaching

This paper is a report of an evaluation study to look at the effectiveness of a nursing training programme provided by one of the tertiary institutions in New Zealand. The purpose of the programme was to provide education to international nurses in order to promote their professional development through expanding their overseas training experiences. Given the rapid economic growth, increased need for healthcare of the public, and increased influence from overseas, the professional development of nurses has been high on the agenda in China. New Zealand’s nursing education system is considered to be of a high standard, and hence it becomes an attractive nursing training destination for international nurses. In response to the move to internationalise services, a collaborative partnership was established between the Shenzhen local government and the Waikato Institute of Technology (WINTEC) in 2016. The intention of this partnership was to provide support to Chinese nurses’ professional development activities. WINTEC designed and delivered a nursing programme to expand the Chinese nurses’ experience of education outside China. A post-course activity evaluation is being completed now from a sample of 30 registered nurses from China. The data is being processed using a Qualtrics online survey with open-ended questions. The benefits or otherwise for Chinese nurses’ learning and their subsequent practice will be reported in this conference
