"Non-docile" mothers - the specifics of understanding and expeiriencing natural birth with regard to perceptions and expectations and the subsequent lived experience of women in the Czech republic

Cílem textu je představit výsledky kvalitativního empirického výzkumu zaměřeného na problematiku přirozeného porodu z emic perspektivy současných českých žen. Výzkumné otázky byly formulovány s cílem porozumět tomu, jaké jsou motivace žen zvolit si pro narození svého dítěte cestu přirozeného porodu, jaké jsou charakteristické prvky přirozeného porodu v narativách žen a jak se představy a očekávání plynoucí z přijetí konkrétního konceptu porodní péče odrážejí v žité porodní zkušenosti těchto žen, to vše z perspektivy sociologie. Získaná data byla analyzována s využitím konceptuálních rámců feministické koncepce těla, biomoci a intimního občanství. Výzkum využíval biograficko-narativní interpretativní metody. Výzkumný soubor zahrnoval dvě skupiny (ve věku od 24 do 39 let, převážně vysokoškolského vzdělání), do nichž byly ženy rozděleny na základě přijaté koncepce porodní péče (koncepce přirozeného porodu a aktivně lékařsky vedeného porodu). Jádrem výzkumu byly narativní a polostrukturované rozhovory. Konceptualizace přirozeného porodu v emic perspektivě žen odrážela shodně znaky sociálně vědního, medicínského i populárně-naučného diskurzu. Motivace k přijetí koncepce přirozeného porodu spočívají v alternativním životním stylu, za kterým však často stojí nedůvěra v současný systém zdravotní péče a předchozí negativní zkušenost s ním. Z hlediska prožívání porodu ženy uváděly jako důležité aspekty roli důvěry, roli porodních asistentek a otázku odpovědnosti za porod. Negativní zkušenosti, které vyplynuly z přijetí koncepce přirozeného porodu, často vedly k přijetí aktivní a angažované občanské role ve společnosti.Katedra sociologieObhájenoThe aim of this paper is to present the results of qualitative empirical research focused at the issue of natural birth from the emic perspective of contemporary Czech women. The research questions were formulated in order to understand what motivations women have to choose the conception of natural birth for their childbirth, what the characteristics of a natural birth in naratives of these women are and how perceptions and expectations arising from the adopting a specific concept of maternity care are reflected in the lived experience of birth in cases of these women, all from the perspective of sociology. The data were analyzed by using conceptual frameworks feminist conception of the body, biopower and intimate citizenship. The research used biographic-narrative interpretive method. The research sample included two groups of women (all aged 24-39 years, mostly with higher education)to which they were divided according to the accepted concept of maternity care (the concept of natural birth and actively medically controlled birth). The core of the research was narrative and semi-structured interviews. Conceptualization of natural birth, as the women themselves understand it, reflected equally signs of social scientific, medical and popular cognitive discourse. The motivation for adopting the concept of natural childbirth lies in an alternative lifestyle, behind which there is often the lack of confidence in the existing health care system and previous negative experience with it. From point of view of experiencing the birth, as important aspects the women stated the role of trust, the role of midwives and the question of responsibility for delivery. Negative experiences that resulted from the adoption of the concept of natural childbirth, often led to the adoption of an active and engaged role in civil society
