The notion of environmental dispositions is offered as a means of tapping significant environment-related personality dimensions. The Environmental Response Inventory (ERI) is presented as a research instrument to measure a number of these dispositions. Development of the ERI is discussed, as well as the pro-cess of conceptual analysis by which the val-idity, person01ogical meaning, and real-life utility of personality variables are appraised.
