Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) stands out in the Dutch history of art and literature as a radical innovator, a protean figure whose many talents served the purpose of networking between the so-called European avant-garde and the Netherlands. Van Doesburg contributed to the Dutch magazine Het getij (The tide) with a series of columns titled Review of the avant-garde (Revue der avant-garde), intended to familiarize the Dutch public with what was going on in the rest of Europe in terms of artistic innovation
