Geological CO<sub>2</sub> sequestration, also known as CO<sub>2</sub> geo-sequestration, is a process to mitigate CO<sub>2</sub> emission into the earth atmosphere in an attempt to reduce the likely greenhouse effect. It involves injection of carbon dioxide, normally in a supercritical state, into a carefully selected underground formation. Selection of an appropriate geological formation for CO<sub>2</sub> geo-sequestration requires a good knowledge of the involved processes and phenomena that occur at the subsurface, and in particular, an estimate of the amount of leakage that might take place in time.
