How EFL Teachers Use English as an Instructional Language in the Class

ABSTRACT . 2016. . (Supervised by Nasiruddin Sainu and Abd. Halim). This research aimed to find out: (1) the condition when teachers use English as the instructional language in the classroom, (2) teachers’ ways of the use of English as the instructional language in the classroom, (3) the difficulties most commonly EFL teachers have in using English in language classroom, and (4) teachers’ ways overcome their difficulties in using English as the instructional language. This research employed descriptive qualitative research. The participants of this research were two English teachers of SMA ISLAM ATHIRAH BARUGA which were taken through random sampling technique. The data of this research were collected by employing video recording, observation notes, and interview. The obtained data was analyzed in three major phases namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and draw conclusion. The results of this research revealed that (1) English was dominantly used by the teachers as the instructional language which functions as the teacher talk in the class, (2) teachers’ ways in using English as the instructional language were divided by the ways the teachers gave instruction, question, and feedback to the students in the class, (3) teachers’ had difficulties during using English in the class dominantly, which were; students’ lack of response, and the less time for English subject in the school, and (4) teachers had their own ways in overcoming those difficulties, which were; maximize the time outside the class and applying interview activity in the class. Moreover, the use of English as the instructional language in the class by EFL teachers is the most essential thing in EFL classroom as the main input for students to learn and produce the target language.
