Golkar Party Convention in 2004

ABSTRACT , (Supervised by Jumadi dan Rivai Mana). The objectives of the research were to investigate the background of Golkar Party choose the convention in deciding the president candidate, to discover the stages and processes until the strategic stage of convention result of Golkar Party in 2004, and the examine the follow up of the result of Golkar Party Convention in 2004 in winning the candidate in presidential election 2004. The research was historical analytic descriptive where the targerts and informants were the figures of political party in general. The data collection technique employed literature study, interview, and documentation. The data of the research were analyzed by source critics and interpretation. The writing technique used was historiography. The results of the research showed that (1) the Golkar Party Convention was inspired by the convention conducted by the olitical parties in the United States of America. Golkar Party Convention was conductedto fix the image and improve electability of Golkar Party which at the time was hit by huge problem, (2) Golkar Party Convention in 2004 involved all of Golkar cadres until the low level and gave opportunity of candidates out of Golkar Party to join in the Convention of presidential candidate in 2004, (3) the result of Golkar Party Convention of presidential candidate in 2004 elected Jend. Purn. Wiranto as the winner of the highest voting during the convention. Wiranto was supported and promoted officially by Golkar Party as President Candidate paired with Salahuddin Wahid as Vice President Candidate
