Vocabulary Teaching Strategies Used by Teacher at Islamic Junior High School of MTs. As’Adiyah No. 2 Bontouse

ABSTRACT BESSE FATWA ILMI. 2016. Vocabulary Teaching Strategies Used by Teacher at Islamic Junior High School of MTs. As’Adiyah No. 2 Bontouse. (Supervised by Baso Jabu and Sukardi Weda) The objectives of this research were: (1) to explore the teaching strategies used by a teacher in facilitating the students to use vocabulary learning strategies at Islamic junior high school of MTs. As’Adiyah No. 2 Bontouse, (2) to describe students’ perceptions of teacher’s teaching strategies in facilitating them to use vocabulary learning strategies at Islamic junior high school of MTs. As’Adiyah No. 2 Bontouse. The research applied descriptive quantitative method. The subject of this research was one English teacher and 30 students of grade VIII in academic year 2016-2017 of Islamic junior high school MTs. As'adiyah No. 2 Bontouse, Wajo Regency. This research used 3 kinds of instruments: classroom observation checklist, guided interview, and questionnaire for students. The data were collected through those instruments. The data from classroom observation and interview were analyzed descriptively while the data of questionnaire were analyzed by Likert scale and SPSS version 24. The result of the descriptive quantitative data showed that (1) the teacher in Islamic junior high school in MTs. As'adiyah No. 2 Bontouse, Wajo Regency used teaching strategies in facilitating the students to use vocabulary learning strategies proposed by Schmitt (1997) namely determination, social, memory, cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies. The most frequently used by the teacher was cognitive strategy (2) the perception of students on vocabulary teaching strategies used by the teacher in facilitating them to use vocabulary learning strategies was good category with (M=4.09), and the highest score of students perception was cognitive strategies. (Dibimbing oleh Baso Jabu and Sukardi Weda) Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: (1) untuk mengeksplorasi strategi pengajaran guru dalam memfasilitasi siswa untuk menggunakan strategi pembelajaran kosakata di sekolah menengah pertama Islam di Kabupaten Wajo, (2) mendeskripsikan persepsi siswa terhadap strategi pengajaran guru dalam memfasilitasi siswa untuk menggunakan strategi pembelajaran kosakata di sekolah menengah pertama Islam di Kabupaten Wajo. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah satu guru bahasa Inggris dan 30 siswa kelas VIII pada tahun ajaran 2016-2017 MTs. As'adiyah No. 2 Bontouse, Kabupaten Wajo. Penelitian ini menggunakan 3 jenis instrumen: lembar ceklis observasi kelas, wawancara, dan kuesioner untuk siswa. Data-data dikumpulkan melalui instrumen tersebut. Data dari observasi kelas dan wawancara dianalisis secara deskriptif sedangkan data kuesioner dianalisis dengan skala Likert dan SPSS versi 24. Hasil dari data deskriptif kuantitatif menunjukkan bahwa (1) guru di sekolah menengah pertama Islam MTs. As'adiyah No. 2 Bontouse, Kabupaten Wajo menggunakan strategi pengajaran yang memfasilitasi siswa untuk menggunakan strategi pembelajaran kosakata yang diusulkan oleh Schmitt (1997) yaitu determinasi, sosial, memori, kognitif dan meta-kognitif. Yang paling sering digunakan oleh guru adalah strategi kognitif (2) kategori persepsi siswa terhadap strategi guru dalam memfasilitasi mereka untuk menggunakan strategi pembelajaran kosakata termasuk dalam kategori baik dengan nilai rerata (M = 4.09), dan nilai persepsi tertinggi siswa adalah terhadap strategi kognitif
