This rigorosum thesis is dealing with the lexical units that determine the subject and examines how the informational structure of the utterance is being impacted by these elements. Comparing the French and Czech linguistic data helps set up the list of the principal determinants (such as the definite and indefinite article in French, demonstrative pronouns, position of the subject in the Czech sentence with regard to the verb, cleft sentences, adverbial and particle expressions etc.) surrounding the subject nominal group. These elements also raise the so-called meta-informative status of the utterance.
