Alternative news sites in the Czech republic

This thesis deals with alternative media and their role in society, focusing in particular on the media focused on the news. There are described theoretical approaches to alternative media, their history and the present. Another important part is the description of their interaction with mainstream media. Contemporary alternative media have hybrid nature because they take over the practices of the mainstream. Likewise, the mainstream media increasingly demonstrate practices that are attributed to alternative media. The following chapters briefly approached the phenomenon of civic journalism and counter-public sphere. The last chapter outlines the current situation of alternative media in the Czech Republic. The practical part consists of analysis of two online periodicals - Deník Referendum and Britské listy. Surveyed periodicals are closer analyzed in terms of their declared focus, funding, contributors, readers and content. The aim of the analysis is to determine to what extent these periodicals meet the desirable attributes of alternative media, how they managed to deal with the financing and how many readers they have. The analysis shows that it is possible to percieve both dailies as alternative media, even though they do not meet certain traditional definitions of the term. Both periodials..
