In many aspects it is quite an exceptional quarter and totally different from other districts of Paris. Its characteristic features make it famous worldwide. Thus the chief aim of the work was to try to find out what is so specific about it, what makes its position in Paris so privileged and in what way it has contributed to the overall development of French culture. The work is conceived as a specific historical and cultural view of the district and strives at picking up its most characteristic features which brought it to the notice of the French themselves as well as members of other peoples around the world. What contributed to the latter to a great degree were its architectonic monuments, and, moreover, its cabarets and concert cafés.
