The Personality of the Bishop of Ceske Budejovice Simon Barta (1920-1940)

The thesis deals with the life, work and activities of the bishop of České Budějovice Šimon Bárta (1864-1940) in the period of 1920-1940, when he headed the diocese of České Budějovice. The study is based on sources from the state archive in Třeboň (fund of bishop archive), contemporary periodicals, official Church documents and numerous literature. Bárta's life is set in a historical and religious context of the First and Second Czechoslovak Republics and Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, while in thematic blocks attempts to reconstruct the episcopal activity of the eighth bishop of České Budějovice. The significant part is dedicated to Bárta's administration of the diocese, organizing the Eucharistic Congress in 1927, changes in the local seminary, national tensions and the bishop's position in the hierarchy of the Czechoslovak bishops. The thesis thus represents an interesting contribution to the history of the Church in the first half of 20th century
