This thesis deals with John Fowles's conception of Victorianism in the book The French Lieutenant's Woman. The basis of the work is the analysis of various areas of Victorian life and their concordance with corresponding areas from the book. The areas encompass the conventional rules with regard to certain social classes and social situations, the power of religion and problems resulting from it. Another area are the relationships between men and women and the position of women in the society with respect to the importance of courtship and marriage.
