The Armenian Community in the Czech Republic in the context of Transnational Migration

Due to progress in informational and communication technologies, accessible long-distance traffic and a gradually globalizing world, the nature of the movement of migrants has lately been developing into its new stage. Migrants often take part in a transnational process that enables them to create and sustain multiple social ties to their country of origin as well as to new host countries. Their identities are frequently formed in relation to more than one national state. This study aims to describe transnational characteristics in the behaviour of the Armenian community in the Czech Republic both in the economic and sociocultural spheres. Based on qualitative research, carried out in the spring of 2009 among the Armenian community in the Czech Republic, the study focuses on the causes of migration, family issues, economical activity of migrants, perception of their cultural and national identity, as well as on the strength of their ties to their nation and the country of origin. Furthermore the study describes recent migration flows from Armenia and defines characteristics of the international Armenian diaspora including the minority living in the Czech Republic.
