The work’s aim is to describe an experience of documentation about the conservation project of painted surfaces, through the use of a geographic information system (G.I.S.). The project, financed by the Soprintendenza dei Beni Architettonici e del Paesaggio of Milan, involve a part of the monastery cloister in Cairate (VA) as an experimental prototype for the future whole conservation of the monastery. The quantity and quality of preliminary knowledge and data, useful for the building and painting conservation, constitute an “open” information system, which can turn the different operating choices enabling to verify and control them and enriching itself through the different phases in order to become a data base for following operations. ...
