Since ICP0 has complex effects on the progress of viral infection that vary greatly with cell type and viral dose, it can be difficult to distinguish between direct effects caused by ICP0 itself and indirect effects caused by the rate of the progression of infection in the absence of ICP0 at the chosen multiplicity of infection.
