This dissertation deals with improving systems for machine translation (automated translation) using semantic information. Such information tends to remain constant during translation, while the syntactic structure of sentences often changes (as a result of linguistic necessities or translators' choices), as shown by the word order change in examples (1) and (2). These changes make it difficult to derive rules automatically from a database with translated sentences, i.e. to derive rules in a data-driven setting.
