Glycine transporters are endogenous regulators of the dual functions of glycine, which acts as a classical inhibitory neurotransmitter at glycinergic synapses and as a modulator of neuronal excitation mediated by NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors at glutamatergic synapses.
