Individual art works may communicate multi-layered meanings but exhibition display can also operate as an encoded form of visual representation. Through much of the 20th century the modernist gallery has been projected as a place separate from the external world, a depoliticised, neutral ‘white cube’ with contextual and other distractions removed to afford a disinterested viewing. Over the last 30 years, this position has been deconstructed to reveal that exhibition spaces and presentation methods can reveal larger cultural orthodoxies and value systems.
