This story takes the form of a letter to Arthur Conan Doyle from Arthur Briggs, telling the truth of the fate of the Mary Celeste and rebutting some of the awful rumours that his story had engendered and clearing his fathers name. In December 1872, the brigantine Mary Celeste was found adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. She was in full sail and in seaworthy condition, but had no crew aboard.
