Book Review: ML Morrison (2005) Elise Boulding: A Life in the Cause of Peace

For so many of us, inspired by Elise Boulding's writing, research, and teaching, reading her biography is bound to become a tantalizing experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It has helped me put “a life” to familiar face, ideas and professional activities. Some of it I already knew, however, this book presented even the most widely known facts from Elise Boulding's life in a new light. And it has, of course, revealed so much more. It has helped contextualize and historicize “A Life in the Cause of Peace,” life of sociologist, futurist, feminist, peace activist, and theorist Elise Boulding. To the previous list of “identifiers” there are others most commonly associated with Professor Boulding, such as mother/wife/grandmother, Quaker/spiritual seeker, peace educator, and great networker. It was all these identifiers, and perhaps some others that are less commonly known and described in a book, that have helped shape not only Boulding's life and work but also her long-lasting influence in the fields of gender, peace, and futures studies
