This thesis is an investigation into the value of design and the role of the exhibition designer in the development of museum exhibitions in Australia. Five research questions were posed and a combined approach of case studies, interviews, questionnaires, phenomenological analysis and an on-going literature review were adopted in producing this thesis. To address the lack of serious descriptive writing by museum exhibition designers, the views of six noted practicing designers (three in the UK and three in Australia) were sought and three case studies of Australian projects designed by three prominent Australian designers were undertaken.
