There is widespread recognition of the need to acknowledge cultural and linguistic diversity in university learning and teaching, yet many staff are uncertain about how to proceed. Issues of dealing with controversial and potentially offensive topics combine with anxiety about the staff member’s knowledge and skills in this area “outside” our professional expertise. How will we avoid giving offence or deal with students’ comments? Can we really cater to cultural and linguistic differences in our curriculum and our pedagogy?
