Growth and survival of juvenile silver-lip (or gold-lip) pearl oysters, Pinctada maxima, were compared at two stocking densities (28 individuals per net: 66 oysters per m2 or 48 individuals per net: 99 oysters per m2) with animals held in either suspended or bottom culture. The experiment was terminated during the sixth week because of high mortality in bottom-cultured pearl oysters. Mean (±SE) survival in 28-pocket nets in suspended culture (99.0 ± 1.6%) was significantly better than that in any other treatment (p < 0.01). Survival was also high in the 48-pocket nets in suspended culture (94.8 ± 3.6%).
