Adherence to tolerances is crucial to the technical quality of a manufactured good. This paper will develop a new approach to tolerances which enables the production of assembly groups that are subject to special fit functions. Fit functions of modules often involve highly precise tolerances. The approach suggested here offers a solution that does not intervene in the design process, does not require expensive machines or error-prone control-loops, and does not use complex assembly procedures. By using modern measurement systems and the infrastructure of Industry 4.0, it is possible to produce assembly groups with high precision parts cost-effectively with equal or better reliability and quality
