A signal convolution method of calculating parameter sensitivity functions is being developed as the basis for a controller optimisation scheme for multivariable control systems. The signals to be convolved in this direct assessment method of parameter sensitivity analysis are obtained directly from the system. This paper details the theory of the signal convolution method in the multivariable case and the results which have been obtained in simulation studies for a helicopter flight control system. These studies have led to conclusions concerning the suitability of the method for use in controller optimization, particularly in the context of system commissioning tests
