The article argues that boundaries as geographical elements are not to be separated from the routine practices they enclose. Everyday life practices are part of the boundaries they ceaselessly reproduce. The article builds on the theory of practice to conceptualize boundaries so as to better understand the social control effects of boundary making. To this end, the genetic classification of boundaries is applied to well-known concepts of 20th century urban planning: the neighborhood unit, the social grouping and the environmental area
