The aim of this thesis is to develop and apply novel climate proxies to understand the palaeoceanographic evolution of the N.E. Atlantic during the late-Glacial and Holocene. The proxies investigated are based on organic molecular compounds called lipid biomarkers and bulk organic matter properties. The primary focus is on long-chain alkenones, molecules which have been extensively used in mid and low latitude open oceans to reconstruct sea surface temperatures (SSTs) during the Quaternary.
