Despite the prevalence of infidelity, there is relatively little research regarding the long-term effects on the children. Combining the views of transgenerational theory with the existing literature on infidelity as a family stressor and infidelity as a trauma, this project examines the potential lasting effects of parental infidelity on the adult child. Study participants included a small sample of adults over the age of 18 who were aware of parental infidelity in their family of origin. Through a series of regression analyses using a moderator model, the researchers found that higher negative self schemata and affect ratings related to the perception of the infidelity were associated with more conservative attitudes toward sex.
