Long-range van der Waals (vdW) interactions play a fundamental role in the structure and stability of many systems, ranging from small dimers to complex hybrid inorganic/organic systems (HIOS). However, how strong is the effect of vdW interactions on the electronic properties of molecules and extended systems? It is often argued that the vdW energy has a small, or even negligible, direct influence on the electron density, n(r), and derived electronic properties, since the vdW energy represents only a tiny fraction (0.001%) of the total electronic energy.
