Drip irrigation has long been promoted as a promising way to use water more efficiently and to meet today’s world water and food challenges (Venot et al., 2014). Its introduction and development have been supported and in some cases funded by multiple actors (government, private companies and NGOs alike) as a technological way of using water more efficiently, notably in arid or semi-arid regions where the expansion of irrigation is often underpinned by increasing abstraction of groundwater (Siebert et al.,2010; Shah, 2009)
