This article demonstrates that the expression sola scriptura has its origins in rather recent radical Lutheran sources; second, argues that this expression is inadequate to describe a Protestant, or at least, a Reformed understanding of the authority of Scripture; third, reflects on the discussion about the interpretation of Trent, and, finally, argues that it is time to abandon this typical twentieth-century formulation of the authority of Scripture
