The mobile frontiers of Piaget's psychology: From academic tourism to interdisciplinary collaboration

Abstract Jean Piaget’s (1896–1980) interdisciplinarity was related to his psychology in several ways. First, he was a simple tourist of other fields: an interested outsider. But as he became increasingly involved in the professionalization of the discipline, he moved through different contexts that constrained the possibilities for successful action in new and different ways. To make these clear, we adopt a little-known aspect of his later epistemological framework: the open hierarchy of levels. This then affords new perspectives of his life, his work, his theory and his location in the history of both Swiss psychology and French psychology. It also outlines his reasoning regarding the necessity of a disciplined approach to interdisciplinary collaboration, institutionalized in the founding of his International Centre for Genetic Epistemology. We therefore come not only to a fuller understanding of how Piaget thought scientific knowledge develops, but also of how the boundaries of scientific disciplines are pushed back. Resumen La interdisciplinariedad de Jean Piaget (1896–1980) estaba asociada a su psicología de diferentes maneras. En primer lugar Piaget fue un simple turista de otros campos: un forastero que manifestaba interés. Pero a medida que se comprometía cada vez más con la profesionalización de la disciplina, comenzó a desplazarse por diferentes encuadres que limitaban las posibilidades de alcanzar el éxito de una manera diferente y novedosa. Con el propósito de aclarar este tema adoptamos un aspecto poco conocido de su posterior marco epistemológico: la jerarquía abierta de niveles. Esto permite introducir nuevas perspectivas de su vida, su trabajo y su teoría, así como del lugar que ocupó en la historia de la psicología suiza y también de la psicología francesa. También explica sus argumentos en relación con la necesidad de crear un enfoque disciplinado para la colaboración interdisciplinaria, institucionalizado en la fundación de su Centro para la Epistemología Genética. En consecuencia, no solo llegamos a tener una mayor comprensión de cómo concibió Piaget el desarrollo del conocimiento científico sino también de cómo se traspasan los límites de las disciplinas científicas
