In Chapter I an introductory survey is given of early experimental work on the fine structure near x-ray absorption edges of elements in crystalline solids and polyatomic molecules and its successful wave-mechanical interpretation by Kronig. The x-ray spectrometers with a much higher resolving power, developed during the last decennia, made it possible to investigate the fine structure close to the edge in more detail.
