This chapter describes the different constituents of the observable interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies and reviews the relationships between the ISM and the star formation in galaxies. The emphasis is on the component which is most widespread and most easily observable, the neutral atomic hydrogen ( H I). It briefly touches upon effects of the environment and of the interplay between star formation and the ISM (feedback)
