The morphology of incommensurately modulated crystals is considered. A surface free energy model is constructed which interprets the stabilization of the incommensurate facets as due to surface pinning of the phase of the modulation wave. The stepped nature of the true crystal surface restricts the stabilization, and thus the surface pinning, to low-index facets. The theory correlates the observed crystal shapes of Rb2ZnBr4 and calaverite with the observed, modulated crystal structures of these compounds
